The chart below illustrates the various sizes in the French scale. The beginner might well ask, "What is an appropriate size?" One answer might be "whatever is comfortable or erotic to you." But to the beginner that is not a very helpful answer. In a hospital setting, catheter sizes of 12 or 14 or less are considered "pediatric" sizes. Most patients start out with a 16 or larger If you suspect that you are built a little small in the urethral department, you might want to start out with a 14 or 16 and work up from there.

Persons experienced in catheters or sounds find that they can tolerate increasingly larger sizes, and in fact strive towards that goal, proudly stating, "I can take a 30." The major mistake is too much, too soon. Nothing should be forced. As soon as one feels resistance or pain, the body is being pushed too rapidly. It's time to back off and wait awhile. Remember the soda straw analogy earlier in this article under Catheters.

I DO NOT recommend any sound smaller that 16 French! Think of it this way: small sounds are like knitting needles–large sounds are like baseball bats. Small sounds can more easily go or be pushed somewhere you don’t want it. LARGE SOUNDS are safer–if they will FIT! Especially for the beginner, I wound never recommend anything smaller that an 18 or 20 French sound. Catheters are inherently much less dangerous that sounds.

If your dick hole isn't big enough, stay away from sounds. There are guys that I refuse to do sounds on for that very reason.

Urethral insertion in its many forms and variations would merit a rating of "TG" or "R" in the DungeonMaster rating system.  Correctly done, it carries minimal risk; however a certain level of specialized knowledge and skill is required, along with a little common sense. Any person wishing to do any kind of urethral insertion for the first time should seek out someone experienced and knowledgeable in the field who is willing to act as guide and teacher. The wise beginner would first watch, taking careful note, and then practice under supervision before attempting on his own. VanBuren and other curved sounds should be avoided until you are thoroughly experienced with catheters and/or straight sounds.

As with most S & M activities, the emotional and physical dynamics are many varied and mixed. On the emotional level, the bottom is giving up a great deal of control when he even allows someone to insert any object into so personal an area. Many people (most of them unfortunate vanilla straights) go through their entire lives without ever having anything inserted into their urethras. The ability to control one's bodily functions, especially those of elimination, is a mark of maturity, a mark of independence, a mark of manliness. Depriving one of the right to decide when he is going to urinate is to take away that independence and manliness.

The physical sensations of something being inserted into the urethra, traversing its length, traveling through the vicinity of the prostate and opening the sphincter muscles is difficult to describe, and probably varies from person to person. The same nerve sensors are being stimulated as when one urinates or when one ejaculates. The sensation of a catheter coming out has been described by many as somewhat akin to ejaculating.

As long as the common-sense rules of cleanliness, sterility, and lack of undue pressure or force are observed, urethral insertion is reasonable safe and extremely erotic.
