Read the instruction book that comes with the pressure cooker before you do anything else! It is your Bible. 250° Fahrenheit is VERY HOT and can cause severe third degree burns! Use all due caution!
These things blow up occasionally. The pressure cooker when hot contains live steam and super heated water! If you purchase the MIRRO® Pressure Cooker, they have an 800 number (800-527-7727) and are happy to give you technical advice on the specifications and proper operation of their cookers. It is doubtful if they will give advice on the use of the cooker as a sterilizer.
It is quite possible to boil off all the water in a pressure cooker. At this point both the cooker and the contents may be damaged as temperatures well in excess of the normal operating range may be reached as the cooker continues to heat.
To prevent problems:
- Follow the manufacture's directions, especially for the amount of water needed for 30 minutes of boiling.
- Monitor the cooker once it begins to emit steam. If the steam stops, turn off the heat and permit the cooker to cool down before touching it. Otherwise you might injure yourself.
- Use a loud timer to remind you when the 30 minutes are up.
Using the Cooker
You should rig a way to keep the instruments up out of the water in the bottom of the pressure cooker. One way is to take three tuna fish or cat food cans (Figure 2), punch holes in the bottom of each can so that they will not float, and place them in the bottom of the Pressure Cooker. Next place the cooking rack (Figure 3) that comes with the pressure cooker over the cat food cans. Lay a paper towel over the rack. Lay your instruments on top of this. (See Figures 4 & 5) Follow the directions of the manufacturer for adding the correct amount of water and sealing the pressure cooker.
For proper sterilization, boil 30 minutes from the time the little weight on top of the pressure cooker bounces to let off steam. At the end of that time, turn off the heat and let cool. The inside of the pressure cooker remains sterile until it is opened. Open the cooker and use your instruments.
Use a pair of sterile forceps to lift you instruments out for use.
A note of caution: The 12 quart MIRRO Pressure Cooker comes with a pressure control weight that allows 5, 10, of 15 pounds of pressure. Be sure that you use the 15 pound pressure setting! (Figure 6)
If you plan to use your instruments on a certain evening, run the pressure cooker in the afternoon, set it aside to cool, and then open it when you are ready to use the instruments that evening for your ecstasy.
JUST PLAY SAFELY!
When using your instruments in your operating theater, have a drop bucket with a soapy water in it close by. Toss your used instruments into it. This starts the sanitation process. It also reassures the patient that you care about such things.

The higher the pressure, the higher the temperature at water boils, the hotter the steam, and the more effective it is at killing. As long as there is water in the container this is the highest temperature the container and its contents can reach.

A note of caution: The 12 quart MIRRO Pressure Cooker comes with a pressure control weight that allows 5, 10, of 15 pounds of pressure. Be sure that you use the 15 pound pressure setting! (Figure 6)! You might put some epoxy in the other two holes in the weight to prevent you from accidentally using the wrong setting.Capacity of the pressure cooker can be increased by layering the contents. Additional cooking racks may be obtained from the MIRRO Company. Successive layers should have spacers so that there is dead space between layers. Your imagination can devise these spacers. The 22 qt cooker comes with two racks.
