The Use of Vaginal Specula in the Rectum

[ Back ] [ Up ] [ Next ] The most common vaginal specula types are the Graves (wide) and the Pederson (Narrow). Each type comes in three sizes: small, medium and large. They have two adjustments: a "V" spread and a parallel spread. Both can be locked in position. In the photo to the left, the Graves is on the left, and the large are at the top. All specula should be sanitized before use. Soak in a 1 to 10 dilution of Chlorine Laundry Beach for 5 minutes, rinse and dry. They should be well lubricated before insertion with K-Y or other water soluble lubricant. Work some lube into the anus and rectum with the fingers to relax the sphincter. The blades must be completely closed for insertion. Use gentle pressure until fully inserted. Slowly expand the blades until the desired dilation is achieved. CAUTION: When removing the speculum, do not let the blades completely close (leave 1/4 to 1/2 inch) otherwise the blades may pinch tissue as the anus clamps down during removal. It is a good idea for both parties involved in the scene experience the insertion of the speculum so that the insertor can better understand what the insertee is feeling and how to better make it a successful scene.
