Sigmoidoscopy is the visual examination of the intestine beyond the lower end of the rectum and into the sigmoid flexure. It uses a rigid instrument that can be as long as twelve inches known as a sigmoidoscope or more colloquially as the silver stallion. Colonoscopy is the visual examination of the upper reaches of the lower intestine and uses an instrument that is flexible and about three feet long.
